6-The Lovers

The next stop on our journey will be the Lovers. First let’s look at what Margaret Starbird writes in “The Tarot Trumps and the Holy Grail”. Read the section titled “The Lovers” starting on page 29.

Journal Writing

Go to your journal and start a new page with the word “The Lovers” and the number 6 at the top. Now take the Lovers card out of your deck and look at it. Again you may want to step into this card and see if the Lovers have any messages for you. Be sure to write everything down in your journal. What do you feel, hear, or things that just pop into your head. Again we are exercising our intuition. What do you see on this card? See if any of the following are on the card: color, figures (both human and animal), shapes, landscape, vegetation, heavenly bodies and symbols.

Now in your journal write down what this card is showing you. Write down any key words that come to mind while looking at this card. This is very important since these are words you are being shown. Be sure to do this before continuing with the lesson.

On this card we see a blazing sun dominates the top portion of this card, with the figure of an angel with outstretched arms protectively watching over a young man and woman who are naked. Some have called them Adam and Eve. Behind the man is the Tree of Life bearing twelve fruits. Behind the woman is the Tree of Good and Evil with a snake coiled around it. The man is looking towards the woman and represents the conscious mind and reason. The woman represents subconscious and emotion. It is she who looks up to the angel Raphael.

T H E   S Y M B O L S

First, this card has the number 6 on it. Six symbolizes harmony within flux. Justice. Equilibrium. Fairness. Balance restored. Peace. Appreciation. Reward. Values. Benefits from past behavior.

Some Lovers cards show a man standing in front of two women. This shows there is a choice to be made. Remember each one of us are made up of both masculine (conscious) and feminine (subconscious) qualities. The Lovers card can teach us how to bring about a compatible union of these two.

Be sure to choose one of the exercises to do.

Here is a spread for you to try!

The Lovers Spread

This spread is for love, in all its forms.

Shuffle the deck and lay out the cards per the diagram above.

Card 1: This card represents your love of yourself, self-love and self-image, representing strengths and weaknesses, or issues to get through.

Card 2: This card represents your love for others, your family, friends, lovers. Can represent a specific person and how you react to him or her, or how you see others, or a relationship.

Card 3: This card represents another factor or person, something not accounted for, because these situations are never simple! Can be a love triangle, or a difficult choice.

Card 4: This card represents strange Fate, or larger currents and directions, situations out of your control. Also represents the love the Universe holds for you, and your trust (or lack of faith) in that.

Cards 1, 2 and 4 are forms of love you will always have and that are not dependent on others: your love for yourself, your love for others, and the love the Universe has for you.
